His six behaviors are:
- Cultivate curiosity.
- Challenge prejudices and discover commonalities.
- Put yourself in another’s shoes. Experience another’s lifestyle.
- Practice the art of conversation.
- Inspire mass action and social change.
- Develop an ambitious imagination.
A TedxMiddlebury talk by Helen Reiss on “The Power of Empathy” – getting closer to understanding our empathic inner senses. Her acronym ‘Empathy’ reminds us of what’s involved in the activation of our empathic senses:
- E = Eye contact.
- M = Muscles of facial expression.
- P = Posture.
- A = Affect – scientific term for expressed emotions.
- T = Tone of voice.
- H = Hearing the whole person – not just their voice.
- Y = Your response.
The above link will take you to an overview page devised by Paul M Helfrich of Elias’s description of the inner senses. According to Elias, the senses, both inner and outer, combine to form a primary belief system within the psyche. Belief systems are the subject of Module 10. Here’s a quote from Elias, session 171, May 04, 1997:
It shall serve you well to be practicing with these inner senses. Just as you may identify many elements of your environment and your reality by your outer senses without thought process, you may identify much subjective activity and bring this into an objective awareness with practice of these inner senses. This shall also serve to lessen your confusion as you allow yourself to widen your awareness, as you move into this shift.
